Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of characters who will split off from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the developments of the third episode demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death initiated the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the team access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that control the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the northern region in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight players to form the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can expect finding out which players will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
