A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
